The American Federation of Musicians celebrates its 125th Anniversary this year. This photo was included in the October 2021 edition of the International Musician. When I tell people I’m a music contractor, they usually don’t know what that means. Contractors are thought of as people who build things, and that’s what I do. I build orchestras. A “building contractor” takes the design of the architect and brings it to reality. He/she hires and oversees the plumbers, the electricians, the masons, the drywallers, and others to complete the vision of the architect. With awareness of the skills of each musician, I take the requirements of the composer and the show’s music director and hire the woodwinds, the brass, the strings, the percussion, and the keyboardists, to bring the notes on the page to reality. And that’s what a music contractor does.
